[classy=app_field3]KINGDOM[/classy] The Kingdom of Tol Sirion exists north of Gnathaigh, south of the kingdoms of Nazarin and Naklin and west of Gardania, Nostea and Sailla, a sizeable island guarded by difficult seas and tides and a treacherous labyrinth of hidden coral that has led to the demise of many a ship and sailor. The climate consists of two seasons – the “dry season” where the air is dry and humid and there can be an absence of rain for months on end, and the “wet season” where storms are constant and deadly, bringing in typhoons and floods. Tol Sirion consists of thick jungles that house flora and fauna not found elsewhere, its predators often spoken of throughout Almanac to frighten others, particularly small children. There are only a few towns within Tol Sirion and only one major “city”, life is difficult within Tol Sirion and has toughened its citizens. People of Tol Sirion are often thought of to be savages. Caught in their “old ways”, they are devout in their worship of their small collection of blood-thirsty gods and goddesses and blood sacrifices are commonplace within their society. Women have little value other than for baring children and are commonly treated as property of their husbands and sons, and there is no higher calling than to be a warrior in Tol Sirion soceity. Kindness, mercy and other “soft” emotions are looked down upon and considered to be unflattering. Tol Sirion citizens are a proud lot; any criticism made toward their culture is always met with violence. Tol Sirion is not a wealthy kingdom, most treasures are sacrificed to the Tol Sirion deities to earn their regard, but neither is it an impoverished land. Trade is the kingdom’s life-blood, the pelts and meat of the local beasts hunted down and skinned by Tol Sirion warriors and hunters are highly prized, as is the export of its live beasts, often desired by foreign royalty as pets. Occasionally slavery is done in Tol Sirion as there are no laws forbidding the practice. The seas around Tol Sirion are heavily infested with pirates, the crews filled with Tol Sirion citizens, and they are often seen within the Kingdom, walking about without resistance, adding to Tol Sirion pockets. [classy=app_field3]OTHER[/classy] In a kingdom where respect is only granted to the strong and blood-shedding is a sport it isn’t all surprising that illiteracy is common amongst the Tol Sirion population. It isn’t a requirement for a warrior to know his letters or numbers, or how to address a foreign prince or princess. But it is required of the Rousseaus. Traditionally, at least one son from every generation of the Tol Sirion royal family has attended the Gardenia academy. And tradition is important in Tol Sirion. Asher is the eldest of three children and currently has a shaky hold upon the Tol Sirion throne as the next king. Considered to be overly reckless and uncontrollable, it is hoped that the academy will “tame” Asher and make him a suitable heir. Once a boy has reached adolescence within Tol Sirion society he is branded with one of the “tattoos”, of unique design within the island kingdom. Tattoos are earned through accomplishments made in a warrior’s life, the more tattoos one has the more impressive he is in the eyes of his people and in the eyes of their gods. Asher has half-a-dozen, considered to be highly impressive for one so young. The Tol Sirion people believe that this means that their prince is beloved by the gods and goddesses. [/classy] |
